Chamomile flower (Matricaria recutita L.) has been widely used as a
herbal medicine because of its wide therapeutic effect. The main
constituents of the essential oil are α-bisabolol and chamazulene
derived from matricin, a non-volatile proazulene. The flowers also
contain flavonoid derivatives such as apigenin and
apigenin-7-glucoside. It has been shown in clinical studies that
chamomile flower helps to relieve skin irritations, inflammation and
itching as well as helps to promote wound healing. The α-bisabolol
also has antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Chamomile flower has been used successfully as an oral or topical
therapy either alone or in combination with other herbs. Chamomile is
very safe for both internal and external use.
Allantoin helps to soothe skin rashes and protect against dry skin and
minor irritations. It works by promoting healthy skin and speeding up
the growth of new healthy tissue for faster healing process.
Many veterinarians are now recognizing the benefits of herbal therapy
instead of the use of pharmaceutical drug such as corticosteroids
which may also affect other organs in the body and should be
considered only as the last resort to relieve extreme discomforts.
